First car/truck

Ok I turn 16 in not too long, and I want a cheap reliable car or truck. What was your guys' first car or truck? Also if you could help me find a cheap one in my area that'd be awesome. Dad's against an old muscle car though. I wanted a cheap '76 Corvette but insurance would be way too high.

16 year old + old muscle car = too much cash

Help finding anything would be appreaciated and lets hear what your guys' first car or truck was.

Edit-By the way my Zip is 50475.

My first truck was a '98 dodge ram i got off a friend for 2500, i'm selling it though, wayyyyy too much for gas. For you i would suggest a good truck, try finding maybe a S-10, or an old chevy or something of the like.
Betterdays

My first car was a Ford Escort ('84). It was really cheap and got me where I needed to go. At the time (the 80's), it was all I could afford.

If I could do it all again though, I'd get a Jeep. So that's my suggestion. They're relatively cheap, reliable, hold their value extremely well, and chicks love them.

I would also recommend a Jeep. They are really nice. My mom had recently bought a Liberty Sport. It's not for haughling(sp?) things around, but it will get you places. Good gas mileage too. Ours is a standard and I love driving it. I also got my drivers permit 2 days ago. I was glad I did not fail the test on my first try. Cheers

first truck was a 88 Dodge Dakota, pimped it out with CD changer 800 watt amp and 8" kickers behind the seat. had custom rims and low profile tires. prety gutless and poor on gas. next truck was a 92 S-10 ex cab more room for stero equipment and a tire scorcher with the 4.3L engine Cool better on gas though Thinking next was a 93 Dodge Dakota with a 5 speed manual, that thing would get rubber in 3 gears Cool Cool till some jackhole pulled out in front of me and totaled it out THumb down then i got a 95 GMC full size 5 speed manual nice truck in fact i would still be driving it but my family out grew the standard cab so i currently have a 97 Dodge Ram.

as you can see i am a truck guy, i would suggest a small truck they get better gas milage than the full size versions but still are more fun to drive than a car IMHO.

YAY OR NAY?

Ok I found a guy that has an old (looks like a 1988) S10 Blazer. It runs good and is 4 wheel drive. It does have rusted out fenders though. He only wants $200 for it. I found a site that has parts cheap.

http://shop.carbodyparts.net/sear...&part_type=&part_subtype=

It'd be about $500 if I found the right parts, and that'd still be cheap. I was wondering if it would be worth it. I'd love to get a cheap blazer and then have cash left to lift it and put bigger tires on it. Any suggestions/comments? I love the truck even though it's got a weak 4.3L in it. Too bad I can't fit the Big Block 402 we have into it. So lmk what you guys think and tell me everything I'd need to fix the rust. It's rusted on the fenders above the tires, and it's rusted in the wheel wells. Lmk guys! ASAP!

Also, it says it's a GMC. Would these Chevy parts work on it?
tigman250

chevy and gmc use the same body parts. don't be so hard on the 4.3L engine, i had one in the S-10 i owned and it would smoke the rear tires no problem! 88 is prety old nowadays it may run but there will be MANY more problems with it, trust me. i would look for something in the 3000-4000 range you may have to borrow money to buy something that expencive but the earlier you get used to having payments the better off you will be, with that being said you will have to maintain a job year arround. spending that much will get you a better car/truck that you don't have to spend a ton of money on to keep it running. going with a truck that old there are going to be alot more problems with it that you can't see especially being 4wd there is a whole nother axle to maintain not to mention a transfer case, bearings, u-joints and on and on. it's your decision but i would steer clear of cars costing hundreds instead of thousands.......unless you are mechanically inclined.

good luck smitty!

Well maybe I'd stay clear of lifting it. That'd be even harder on U-Joints. I do have people that could help me out fixing it up if we had to. I'm sure I wouldn't need to use the 4WD that often. Mainly just in the winter. I'm going to look into it, but I'm not 100% sure I'll get it. Also, is the Chevy Blazer S10 the same as the GMC Jimmy S15?

we just bout a car for my sister the oter day, a toyota corrola, jsut saying Very Happy

Do not buy the S10 Blazer. Once it hits so many miles, that thing will break on you so many times. My mom had one and once the bearings went out, every time we replaced the bearings they would wear out really quickly. It becomes a big money hole that will always cost you more to fix. That is why we got the Jeep.

The differentials also had problems and the intake manifold had leaked.
Their are also a lot of minor problems that just make it a hassle to keep up. It is cheaper for us to buy a whole new car instead of reparing ours constantly. We had literally spent over $2000 on bearings alone. Ours was also a 98 S10 Blazer.

What ever you do, DO NOT buy they blazer.

Ok thanks for the input guys. Anyone want to help me find a nice car or truck in my area then? Smile

Well I'm looking at '90's Silverados right now. I'd love a truck. The Blazer is kinda in the back of my mind, but I'm thinking it's a no. There is always a chance, but I probably won't get it.

My first was '76 Cutlass, 260 v8, four door. It coast I think $400 back in 1987. I put a chrome air cleaner on it to make go faster. Very Happy

It ran great the body was perfect and that was good for a NY driven car.
